The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), led by Thitivut Ngernklay, Deputy Governor (Operation Transmission), in partnership with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wisanu Subsompon, Deputy Governor of the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA); Assoc. Prof. Somphop Purivigraipong, Commissioner of the Office of The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC); Rachan Pensiri, Advisor to the Executive Committee of The Telecommunications Association of Thailand; representatives of the Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC); telecommunication enterprises; and related networks have agreed to collaborate in removing communication cables along Asok Montri Road, from Petchburi intersection to Sukhumvit intersection, spanning 2.4 kilometres, following the completion of underground conduits construction.
As a state-owned enterprise responsible for the distribution of electricity in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Samut Prakan, MEA has been supporting the organisation of communication cables in accordance with the government policy and Ministry of Interior, facilitating convenience and safety for related agencies while working on electricity poles. The project to convert overhead power lines to underground is aimed at enhancing safety, improving scenery, ensuring electricity stability, and preventing accidents.
In 2024, MEA and partner agencies plan to construct underground communication cables along 29 routes, covering more than 61 kilometres, including key roads such as Asok Montri Road, Sri Ayutthaya Road, Rama IV Road, and Charansanitwong Road. Additionally, MEA has collaborated with relevant agencies to remove communication cables from electrical poles over a total distance of more than 570 kilometres, averaging 45 kilometres per month. By 2025, MEA aims to convert communication cables on electric poles across a total distance of 800 kilometres.
MEA supports the installation of communication cable perches on electrical poles and establishes measure controls for the installation of communication cables in compliance with standards and MEA criteria. These criteria include creating a data management system for communication cables on electric poles, setting up Smart CCM (Smart Communication Cable Management) for online requests to install communication cables, recording communication lines data, and mapping the installation routes based on MEA's Geographic Information System (GIS) to enhance information management on newly installed communication lines.
Beyond communication cables, MEA is advancing an underground electrical cable project, aiming to complete 313.5 kilometres by 2029. This collaboration will facilitate simultaneous work on communication lines underground to minimise overlapping operations and reduce potential impacts to the public in the construction area.
