BEM, entrusted by the government to undertake the Orange Line MRT from Bang Khun Non to Min Buri (Suwinthawong), has officially signed a contract with CK. This partnership focuses on the civil engineering construction of the Orange Line’s western section, extending from Bang Khun Non to Thailand Cultural Centre. The project, set to commence in August, is slated for completion in six years. The eastern section, from Thailand Cultural Centre to Min Buri, is projected to be operational within three years and six months, ahead of schedule.
Dr. Sombat Kitjalaksana, Managing Director of BEM, emphasized the company's readiness to proceed with the project, bolstered by CK’s expertise in handling large-scale infrastructure developments. CK has already mobilized its team and equipment to ensure timely and quality completion of the construction.
In addition to civil construction, BEM is in negotiations for procuring and installing the electric train system. The plan includes ordering 53 electric trains, 32 for the Orange Line and 21 additional trains for the Blue Line project. BEM prioritizes quality and safety, sourcing from manufacturers in Germany and Japan.
The total project investment of over 140 billion baht will be financed through a 120 billion baht loan, covering 90 billion baht for civil works on the western section and 30 billion baht for the electric train system. Additional funds will come from BEM’s operations and debentures. The company anticipates 120,000 passengers per day for the eastern section's first year, rising to 300,000 once the entire line is operational, with fares ranging from 17 to 44 baht.
Dr. Sombat highlighted the exceptional year for BEM, with profits rebounding post-COVID-19 and reaching new highs annually due to increasing passenger numbers, effective cost control, and low financial costs.
The Orange Line concession is a significant S-Curve project for BEM, enhancing business operations and supporting the income of the existing Blue Line MRT. Approximately 80% of the new passengers are expected to connect to the Blue Line, promoting better cost management and exponential growth.
Moreover, the Double Deck expressway project is expected to conclude this year, in line with the government’s policy to reduce public investment burdens and encourage private sector participation. BEM is also involved in the Purple Line Southern Section project, with government discussions on private sector management underway.
BEM is further supporting fare integration through the EMV system and public cost reduction initiatives, ensuring transparent negotiations to maximize public benefits.
