Thailand Leads in Sustainable Tourism with APEC Workshop

Thailand hosts a pivotal workshop to share best practises in sustainable tourism management, focusing on conservation and resilience in fragile and protected areas within the APEC region.

As one of the significant steps towards sustainability, Thailand is set to host a groundbreaking workshop titled "Beyond Carrying Capacity: Best Practises in Sustainable Tourism Management in Conservation, Fragile, and Protected Areas." Scheduled for 30 - 31 July 2024, at The Westin Grande Sukhumvit Hotel, Bangkok, this pivotal event is set to gather key players across the APEC region to share cutting-edge practises in sustainable tourism.

Organised by the Department of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand, with financial support from the APEC Fund, this workshop aims to spotlight innovative strategies for managing tourism impacts on conservation, fragile, and protected areas. By showcasing best practises and fostering collaborative discussions, Thailand reaffirms its role as a leader in promoting sustainable tourism that balances economic growth with environmental stewardship.

Through interactive sessions and group discussions, the participants will explore practical solutions to move towards sustainability and resilience in tourism within APEC economies.

This workshop, under APEC Tourism Strategic Plan 2020 – 2024, aligns with APEC's Putrajaya Vision 2040, the Aotearoa Plan of Action and reinforces Thailand's commitment to sustainable development and responsible tourism. The outcomes will drive forward the Bangkok Goals on BCG Economy, focusing on environmental conservation and the responsible use of natural resources.

All findings and recommendations from the workshop will be compiled into a comprehensive Handbook on Sustainable Tourism Management in Conservation, Fragile, and Protected Areas. This APEC publication will be accessible for free on the APEC website and distributed to all APEC economies. It will serve as a valuable resource for government agencies, academic institutions, stakeholders, and those responsible for managing tourism sites.

The Department of Tourism, Thailand, believes that this workshop will bring us one step closer to sustainability and resilience in tourism in the APEC region.
