Bangchak Leads Thailand’s Path to Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Bangchak Corporation advances its SAF production from used cooking oil, reinforcing its commitment to carbon-free aviation and Thailand’s net zero goals.

Bangchak Corporation’s leadership in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production took centre stage during the SAF Readiness in Thailand panel discussion at the Thai Aviation Sustainability Day, held at the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Representing the company, Mrs. Gloyta Nathalang, Senior Executive Vice President of Sustainability Management and Corporate Communications, emphasised Bangchak’s efforts in producing SAF from used cooking oil, marking a key milestone in Thailand’s transition to sustainable energy solutions.

Bangchak, through its subsidiary BSGF Co., Ltd., has invested THB 8.5 billion in the development of SAF production at its Phra Khanong refinery, which is expected to commence operations in early Q2 2025 with a production capacity of 1 million litres per day. The company has established a nationwide raw material collection network through initiatives such as the No Refry campaign in collaboration with the Department of Health and the Fry to Fly initiative, which partners with restaurants, shopping malls, convention centres, and local organisations to collect used cooking oil. In addition, 281 Bangchak service stations now serve as collection points.

Recently, the Fry to Fly initiative expanded through a partnership with the Bai Mai Pan Suk Foundation, setting up collection stations at schools to encourage students and families to contribute used cooking oil. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supports Bangchak’s goal of achieving Net Zero GHG Emissions by 2050, in line with Thailand’s national target for 2065.

During the panel, Mrs. Gloyta discussed the strategic direction for SAF development in Thailand, including the opportunities and challenges of local production and the importance of supportive policies. Bangchak’s SAF initiative will not only contribute to the aviation industry’s sustainability but also position Thailand as a leader in clean energy production in Southeast Asia.
