Mitr Phol Group, a global leader in sustainable practices within the food products industry, continues its pioneering efforts to promote green sugarcane harvesting. For the 7th consecutive year, the company is purchasing sugarcane leaves through its “Let’s Green the Sugarcane” campaign, aiming to foster sustainable agricultural practices while providing cane growers with increased income opportunities.
The campaign, which supports the 2024/2025 milling season starting in December, encourages farmers to harvest sugarcane in a green, clean, and quality-focused manner. By purchasing 700,000 tons of sugarcane leaves at 900 baht per ton, Mitr Phol is offering farmers an alternative revenue stream while advancing environmental sustainability. The leaves will primarily be used as biomass fuel, a renewable energy source critical to reducing fossil fuel dependence, while some will serve as organic mulch to improve soil health.
Mr. Buntoeng Vongkusolkit, Chairman of Mitr Phol Group, highlighted the company’s commitment:
"Mitr Phol Group is dedicated to sustainable development, supporting cane growers in transitioning to modern, green harvesting practices. Through innovations like our ‘Mitr Phol ModernFarm,’ we enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and preserve the environment, ensuring a sustainable future for farmers and society."
Over the past decade, Mitr Phol’s “Mitr Phol ModernFarm” initiative has delivered advanced agricultural techniques to growers, addressing every step of the sugarcane lifecycle—from soil management and planting to harvesting. To date, the company has purchased over 1.7 million tons of sugarcane leaves, generating more than 2.5 billion baht in supplementary income for farmers.
Agricultural burning, a key contributor to air pollution, remains a significant challenge in Thailand’s agricultural sector. Mitr Phol actively collaborates with stakeholders, including government bodies, private organisations, and academic institutions, to tackle this issue. Research partnerships with Kalasin University and joint efforts with authorities in Suphan Buri province focus on promoting non-burning technologies and enhancing fire prevention strategies.
Through its “Let’s Green the Sugarcane” campaign, Mitr Phol aims to further raise awareness about the benefits of green harvesting. The initiative aligns with the company’s “Mitr Phol Triple Grows” sustainability strategy, which prioritises economic growth, environmental conservation, and social collaboration to create long-term value for all stakeholders.
With its commitment to innovative and sustainable practices, Mitr Phol Group continues to lead Thailand’s agricultural sector toward a greener and more prosperous future.
