In the wake of the powerful M7.7 earthquake that struck Myanmar in March and was felt in Bangkok, six Bangkok-based organisations came together to support relief efforts through a charity football tournament. Held on Saturday, 26 April, the friendly match united teams from the public and private sectors with a shared goal of raising funds for those affected. The initiative resulted in donations exceeding THB 40,000, which were formally accepted by the Thai Red Cross Society (TRCS) on 4 May 2025. Proceeds will support the TRCS’s ongoing humanitarian work in Myanmar.

Polo Football Park in Bangkok served as the venue, featuring teams from leading technology companies and diplomatic representatives. Participants included:

  • ATA IT, a Bangkok-based provider of captive IT solutions
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) Thailand, a global cloud computing firm
  • Bitkub Group, Thailand’s leading digital asset and blockchain technology company
  • Omise, a global fintech payment provider
  • Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA)
  • The British Embassy Bangkok

The event was initiated by Toby Knight, Communications & Training Manager at ATA IT, who explained, “The company was affected as a whole by the earthquake, and many of our employees are from Myanmar, so we decided to organise this tournament to show our support. Our parent company, the National Bank of Canada, was also moved by the event’s impact and donated CAD 10,000 (THB 242,723) to the Canadian Red Cross.”

Omise’s donation was made through Kyle Salter, People Operations Manager, SEA, who noted, “Committing ourselves to this cause reflects Omise’s belief that people matter—within and beyond our workplace. We are proud that our Thailand team came together in such a meaningful way, standing in solidarity with those affected by the earthquake in both Myanmar and Thailand. This initiative demonstrates our values in action—our willingness to act with empathy, contribute where it matters, and support our broader community in times of need. We are also proud to support the Red Cross in their vital work to rebuild and bring relief to the communities most impacted.”

Co-organiser Bernard Obiechina, also from Omise, added, “The swift response from teams across six organisations, who collectively raised over THB 40,000 for earthquake recovery efforts, signifies shared empathy for those affected. We hope this event raises awareness about the ongoing need for humanitarian support in the devastated regions hit by March's earthquake.”

Thai MFA representative Aeyaya Chorot said, “As a close friend and neighbour of Myanmar, we stand with the people of Myanmar during this challenging time following the recent earthquake. This charity football tournament reflects not just our enduring support but our unity and solidarity with all of our friends in Myanmar.”

Bitkub Group emerged victorious in the tournament. Artthawit Hung, IT Security Director and company representative, shared, “Beyond the competition, we're united in supporting those affected by the Myanmar earthquake, aligning with Bitkub's ESG strategy. We aim to send not just financial aid, but hope and solidarity to communities in need. Bitkub Group is proud to contribute and will continue supporting broader societal needs.”

Relief efforts remain ongoing, with Thailand providing vital supplies, financial aid, and personnel through the TRCS. The UK government has committed £25 million in support to Myanmar, including up to £5 million in matched donations for the UK’s Disasters Emergency Committee appeal.
