CHON BURI: Gangsters who claimed "ownership" of Pattaya beach have expelled tourists and injured an Indian businessman for sitting on part of the beach without permission.

The incident occurred just 100 metres from Pattaya Police Station late on Tuesday night and involved Thai and Indian tourists, .

Baldeep Sing Gulati complained to police that he was assaulted and injured by a group of Thai men. The 41-year-old and his Indian friend were relaxing on the beach when the incident occurred.

Thai tourist Rinlada Klahan said she and her friends quickly left the area when the gangsters approached the tourists and claimed the area was overseen by a landlord.

"I wonder how this public area is overseen by them," she told police.

The encounter escalated into a brief brawl in which Mr Gulati was punched in the face and knocked to the ground, Ms Rinlada said.

She suspected the gangsters were members of a group who rent mats to tourists sitting on the beach.

Police were hunting down the gang.
