Grab has partnered with Nakorn Lanna Cooperative to launch GrabTukTuk Electric service in Chiang Mai.

The new feature for the Grab app will allow passengers to book an electric tuk-tuk in addition to the existing features of Grab RodDaeng for hiring a songthaew truck and JustGrab for booking either a car or taxi.

"The service is the first in Southeast Asia," said Grab Thailand Country Head Tarin Thaniyavarn, adding that the service would drive the adoption of electric transportation options in Thailand.

The tuk-tuk service is operated by Nakorn Lanna Cooperative. The company received permission from the Department of Land Transportation in 2017 to provide electric tuk-tuks to commuters in Chiang Mai.

The company expects to replace typical tuk-tuks with 450 electric tuk-tuks within this year. The effort will help reduce air and noise pollution levels.
