Faith in humanity

Some years ago, I was invited by a friend to visit Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. I had never visited Kalimantan before, only Sabah and Sarawak of Malaysia and Brunei. They are all on this gigantic island of Borneo.

The purpose of the trip was to help build a church deep in the interior of Borneo. So we had to transport raw materials to this logging camp. It was necessary to travel at night to avoid not just the heat but also the lorries. Along the way, we had to cross a river by ferry.

Life in the logging camp was simple and spartan. Yet hospitality was very much alive as shown by this young man who was preparing a meal for me in the most basic way. It was a very memorable and meaningful journey.

When travelling, it’s not unusual to run into many faces. While many just flash by, others linger on not just in your memory but also in your memory cards. It might be a person, an animal or even a nonliving thing.

If you have taken a picture of such a face with a story you wish to share, a face with the eyes looking directly at the camera signifying that the shot was made not against their will, feel free to email the photo and a brief text to pongpetm@bangkokpost.co.th. By the way, the minimum file size is 2MB.
