Visakha Bucha ceremonies go online

This year, Visakha Bucha Day will fall on May 26. To mark the birth, enlightenment and passing (parinirvana) of Buddha, Buddhists normally go to temples near their home to perform wian thian rites (a triple clockwise circumambulation). People walk three rounds around the temple's ubosot while holding a lit candle, three burning joss sticks and flowers in palms to commemorate the Buddha, his teachings and his enlightened followers.

During the pandemic, the National Office of Buddhism has announced a ban on public gathering as well as cancelled the Visakha Bucha ceremony at Phutthamonthon.

Instead, the Culture Ministry is encouraging Buddhists to join the online ceremony at bit.ly/33Mc53h during May 24-28.
