TRAVEL
Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit

On a rainy Sunday afternoon two weeks ago I -- a lone traveller -- was checking into the Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit when I saw other guests casually parade into the hotel, which provided hope of economic recovery.

I was attending a dinner function at one of the hotel's restaurants later in the evening, so decided to stay the night and try the staycation package.

Other check-in guests were local families looking for a quick 5-star getaway and folks looking to work from home in the luxury and convenience of a hotel.

Although I am not often excited by hotel stays, I found the experience here very pleasant, memorable and value for money.

Location

Hyatt Regency Bangkok, launched in 2018, is located on Sukhumvit Road at the mouth of Soi 13, or the bustling Nana neighbourhood.

The hotel has a direct connection to the BTS Skytrain's Nana station. Although it is easily accessible by public transport, it also has plenty of parking for guests at its private car park.

Those who wish to journey on foot will find countless local shops and eateries as well as a dozen major shopping malls, including Terminal 21, Central Embassy, Gaysorn, EmQuartier and Amarin Plaza, within a 30-minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel is just a stone's throw away from the financial district of Silom and Sathon and also near Benjakitti Park (15-minute walk) and Lumphini Park (28-minute walk).

Design and Facilities

The 273-room hotel is a part of a 31-storey mixed-use building that includes a luxurious condominium and upscale retail space.

The interior, designed by top-tier design company PIA, pays tribute to the golden periods of Thai architecture and history through contemporary aesthetics on teakwood and bronze sculptures.

Guests can choose from 35m² standard rooms, 77m² executive suites, and the 209m² presidential suite, which has a separate dining area, private workout studio and outdoor terrace.

All guestrooms are equipped with Hyatt Mobile Entry technology, enabling guests to use their smartphone in lieu of a room keycard after a simple registration and app download. Free wireless internet connection throughout the hotel is also offered to customers.

A wide range of recreational and wellness facilities are located on the 6th floor, including an outdoor free-form swimming pool surrounded by a landscape garden, a whirlpool and a steam room. A 24-hour gym, overlooking the city, is equipped with a cardio zone, strength zone and free weights.

For functional events, there's a 1,359m² ballroom that can accommodate up to 850 guests. Four other meeting suites, equipped with the latest audio-visual facilities, are also available for up to 140 guests.

My Room

I stayed in the club room. It's a 37m² standard-sized guestroom that comes with a selection of club benefits.

One of the exclusive benefits is access to the Regency Club Lounge located on the 27th floor. It's where a selection of snacks and beverages are available to guests all day. Another benefit is the one-hour complimentary use of the club lounge's meeting room, subject to availability upon advance reservations.

Room 2008 received me with a spic-and-span foyer entry and fresh linen scent. There was a semi-open closet with large storage space next to a minibar equipped with a small fridge, a coffee corner and a safety deposit box.

A workspace and lounge chair was set by a floor-to-ceiling window that allowed a panoramic view of the city.

Opposite my king-sized bed was a 55-inch smart TV with approximately 40 satellite channels. A Bluetooth-enabled JBL sound system doubles as an alarm clock.

Near the bedroom area was a spacious bathroom boasting a walk-in shower and a separate bathtub with a complete range of bath and body care amenities.

Dining

Of course, staying in the metro Sukhumvit area means you are blessed with an astounding number of restaurants and food options.

However, guests at Hyatt Regency Sukhumvit don't have to wander the street in search of good food.

The hotel features two main dining outlets: Market Café and Spectrum Lounge & Bar.

Market Café is a very spacious 150-seat all-day dining international restaurant serving buffet breakfast, a la carte lunch, and fine Thai cuisine dinner.

Breakfast, available from 7am to 10.30am, features more than 50 dishes of Western and Asian favourites including freshly-made pancakes and waffles which proved faultless, a variety of egg dishes -- the eggs Benedict with ham on brioche toast was delicious -- a decent selection of salad and pastries, noodles and rice dishes as well as fruit juice and fresh-brewed coffee.

Lunch is offered through the daily all-you-can-eat menu highlighting fresh river prawns and seafood, priced at 1,099 baht per person.

Dinner is provided by Michelin-starred Thai restaurant Khao.

The menu of Market Café by Khao showcases authentic Thai dishes, each inspired by a taste profile of bygone recipes. Recommended dishes include crispy sago crackers with sweet peanut and prawn curry dipping; lamb shank massaman curry; southern Thai-style spicy shrimp paste relish; and spicy soup of young pork spare ribs flavoured with shrimp paste.

The other dining outlet, Spectrum, occupies the hotel's top three floors including the rooftop. The evening venue, entertained by live music, serves up Western-styled snacks, grills, meals and drinks as well as a monthly Sunday brunch buffet.

Guests with club benefits are treated to a selection of freshly-made hors d'oeuvres, light meals, desserts and cocktails at the Regency Club Lounge during the daily happy hours.

Special Promotion

At the moment, three staycation packages on offer include a half-board package (4,199 baht per room per night), an all-inclusive package (6,999 baht per room per night) and a special Steakation package (5,199 baht per room per night).

A collaboration between the hotel and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), the Steakation package, available until the end of January, includes a one-night stay in a standard room for two persons, a breakfast buffet, a family-style Thai cuisine set dinner featuring prime-quality Australian beef and access to the club lounge.
