Editorial Reviews

Festive buffets at Novotel Bangkok on Siam SQUARE are paradoxically among the most well-rounded

One of the most popular and affordable upscale buffets in town has long been The SQUARE, up on the 2nd floor of Novotel Bangkok on Siam Square.

It's a combination of things. The location at the heart of a magnet for the city's fashionable set doesn't hurt, nor the easy skytrain access. But there's a lot of competition, too, so that's where its upscale ambience makes a difference. It's fashionably styled with lots of signature squares in black and red, and nice and light with wide windows gazing into Siam Square. In other words, it's a sanctuary away from the surrounding hubbub, a place to take a breather, collect one's thoughts and indulge an appetite for everything fresh and tasty.

There's also the added attraction that The SQUARE is big on special occasions and as a matter of course, regularly freshens everything up with a special food festival, new menu items, and even new chefs.

Naturally, Christmas and New Year are especially big occasions - times to splurge on luxury produce, inspired culinary concepts and, basically, more and better everything.

As per usual, the Christmas buffet will have at its heart all the traditional goodies associated with Santa's annual arrival, from Roasted Tom Turkey and all the trimmings to the seasonal sweet treats. True,

Christmas pud isn't to everyone's taste but The SQUARE's traditional recipe is more accessible than most and, if that still doesn't suit, the hotel's renowned French bakery - one of the most consistently irresistible in town - will tempt you with an onslaught of everything from crunchy cookies to homemade ice creams and sumptuous gateaux.

New Year, meanwhile, doesn't have the same must-haves as Noel: it's more about simple luxury every whichway - but that is also something at which The SQUARE is particularly adept.

Ever eager to please, the restaurant offered a preview of three of the new dishes it will enhance all its festive season buffets with and it was certainly enough to create a sense of anticipation.

The first of these is scallop tabouleh. The festive buffets will be replete with a constant stream of plump, smokily seared prime Australian scallops set still sizzling in little dishes of tabouleh, the sharp and fresh

Middle Eastern salad of finely chopped mint, parsley, garlic, tomato, citrus and bulgur. Great contrasts of delectable seafood and the freshness of Mediterranean salad.

Another special savoury item is some exceptional poached Norwegian salmon, such a delicious product even on its own but here teased to another level in a divine combination with sauvignon blanc white wine and rare and expensive saffron cream sauce.

The other preview dish was a creative festive dessert: Thai tea chocolate dome, a nice combination of one of the most definitive local flavours, that strangely orangey sweet tea, with a sublimely smooth grand cru chocolate mousse frivolously embellished with cute seasonal decorations.

On my recent visit to the sumptuous Sunday Brunch, which the festive buffets take as a starting point, a number of items particularly impressed. The lamb with herb crust and mint sauce was wonderfully tender and cooked to perfection. Same goes for the New Zealand prime rib of beef. In fact, all the produce was of high quality and delicious, from the Parma ham to the cold roast pork to the French cheeses. The crab and prawns were kept well steamed to emphasise their plump freshness. There were also lots of condiments - not just the usual like thousand island but Japanese dressing too.

Hot dishes were especially tempting, among them wok-pork with Hong Kong sauce, steamed salmon with snapper rolls/pesto cream sauce, chicken Kiev cheese and parsley sauce and more, all rendered more enjoyable by lashings of roasted garlic and herb mashed potatoes. The pasta station was well stocked with options also, ranging from squid ink linguine to tagiatelle and lots of seafood - clams and squid among them - to make moreish sauces. They even had a special pizza corner with the pizza slices kept properly hot and crispy in a special glass sided warmer. Desserts are always terrific at The SQUARE, thanks to the influence of the reliable bakery.

Amongst the many delights from Asia and the West, daily highlights at The SQUARE include Halal prepared cuisine, Italian, Thai, Japanese and Indian corners, the latter including several curries and breads and chicken tandoori. The chilled seafood and salad station highlights in-house smoked salmon, fresh sushi and sashimi.

The team of chefs is on hand to prepare your selection of fresh seafood, meats, vegetables and seasonings, from a market style open kitchen, so you can create each dish to your personal liking.

Over on the dessert buffet, you can indulge in your chocolate fantasies with the chocolate fountain surrounded by mouth-watering chocolate treats, French inspired creamy mousses, cakes and slices and a fresh crepe and waffle station are always on hand along with large scoops of home-style gelato, sorbet or ice creams.

Those who like to finish with cheese are in luck also. The selection isn't massive but what there is has real quality, ranging cheddar to camembert and goat cheese, all well supported with crackers, rolls and dried fruits. These especially complement the coffee and tea selections included in the buffet price. And as the kids enjoy meeting friends and playing video games, painting and laughing with clowns up to the very last minute, the time will come to reflect on a very good Christmas and/or New Year celebration indeed.
