Capsule hotels in Thailand are fast becoming the cheap solution for travellers wanting a bed and not much else

Though Thailand is not short of space, capsule hotels are popping up to welcomed travellers who are looking for simple accommodation.

Suvarnabhumi International Airport recently opened a budget hotel known as Boxtel, which offers 12 guestrooms. Each room is 4m², has a single bed, clean sheets and blanket, a folding table and a bed lamp. Once you check-in, you are handed a bottle of water, Wi-Fi password and key card.

Situated in the basement, on the same floor as the Airport Rail Link Station, Boxtel offers the utmost privacy. The only minus point of the hotel is that rooms don't have attached bathrooms. Bathrooms and toilets are communal. Boxtel's room rates are 700 baht for the first two hours and 300 baht for each hour after that.

"Our busiest period is late at night, when transit passengers wait for their connecting flights. It is recommended that you make a reservation," said front office staff. Don Mueang International Airport also has it's own capsule hotel called Sleep Box, on the fourth floor of the Domestic Passenger Terminal (Terminal 2), which offers rooms at 1,000 baht for three hours.

Here rooms are 15m² and come with a TV, drinking water and attached bathroom. An entire night's stay (9pm-6am) is priced 1,800 baht, with a 200 baht food coupon. Day use service for a shower (30 min) is available for 300 baht. A 24-hour lounge offers food and drink.

My Bed Hotel is Bangkok's only real capsule hotel, which opened in 2013. Located at Lat Phrao MRT station on Ratchadaphisek Road, it offers 31 capsule beds at 450 baht per night.

"It's a good business. During weekdays, there are a number of business travellers, while tourists fill up all the sleep boxes on weekends," said Suchanya Baraprom, resident manager. The hotel also offers a room for two at 950 baht.

Mini Boxtel Aonang Hostel (www.miniboxtel.com) is a short walk off Krabi's Ao Nang beach and offers a capsule bed for 350 baht per night. Why Not Backpackers (www.capsulehostelpatong.com) in bustling Patong, Phuket, offers beds for 295 baht per night. Chiang Mai Gate Capsule Hotel (www.chiangmaigatecapsulehostel.com) is in the downtown area and rates start from around 200 baht per night.

The Capsule Hostel (www.capsule-thailand.com/hostel-room) in Chiang Khan, Loei, offers beds for 490 baht per night, plus a number of facilities. The cheapest is Hotel Capsule Suratthani (084-689-6222) with air-con, capsule bed, shared bathrooms and free parking spaces.

Most capsule hotels provide capsule beds with air-con, comfortable bedding, personal reading light, a roller blind, access to a shared bathroom, shared lounge areas with TV and free Wi-Fi. Some may add computers, personal lockers and a kitchen area.
