Official description

The Peninsula Academy, an eclectic range of definitively Thai classes, tours and activities, available to all guests and designed to give an insider introduction to key aspects of the local culture, lifestyle, cuisine, arts and history.

At the end of the day, or half day, the idea is that you have actually experienced what it is to be Thai and gained a more profound and lasting insight into the country's character than is inherent in all your haul of tchotchkes from the magnificent malls and mind-bending markets.

One can't help but note the irony of the ambition given that the hotel is more or less literally an ivory tower dedicated to the art of refined living. And, by contrast, The Peninsula Academy offerings do bring you down to terra firma Thai-style, albeit with attentive staff on hand with a fan, an icy drink, a gourmet indulgence or two and a comfy seat.

The seven Peninsula Academy experiences for 2013-14 range from gaining insights into Thai cuisine, herbal wisdom and martial arts to a heli tour to a countryvineyard and an unseen Bangkok adventurefor adults.

Youngsters are not excluded from the fun either. The Peninsula Kids' Academy engages children guests with fun creative possibilities.

The programmes are priced from B1,500 to B270,000. Advance booking is required.

Exploring Thai culture the posh way with The Peninsula Academy

While there is an automatic close association between any Peninsula hotel and cosseted luxury, they also understand that too much buffering against life as it is lived by the masses in each of its exotic locations can be stifling.

The Peninsula Bangkok is a case in point. Though it wants guests to be comfortable it hopes they don't leave without experiencing something of Thailand, true and timeless.

THE PENINSULA ACADEMY

Fine Wine Meets Adventure: For a wow experience, be whisked from the hotel's rooftop helipad along the coast to HuaHin to visit the much celebrated Monsoon Valley vineyard. An elephant back adventure ensues followed by a sampling of the vintages and a gourmet dinner that the wines inspire in the hotel's Executive Chef. Design your own wine label and have your personal videographer and photographer record the special moments as keepsakes.

Thai Martial Art: Under the watchful guidance of a Muay Thai master, participants gain inner knowledge of the art of Muay Thai kickboxing. The one-hour private session is enshrined amidst the lush Thiptara garden by the river. Then soothe those tired sinews with the ultimate antidote: a 80-minute massage at the award winning Peninsula Spa.

Herbal Discovery: Begin the day with a gentle ginger footbath while sipping lemongrass tea, followed by an inspiring workshop on how to blend and use herbs to maintain elemental balance. Experience the healing power first-hand with a relaxing aromatherapy massage and a healthy Naturally Peninsula meal.

Footprint from The Past: Venture into Bangkok's intriguing past with an exploration of its historic neighbourhoods alongside the Chao Phraya River. Travel aboard a Peninsula river boat and stop off in areas of unique significance, from Santa Cruz Church to Kalayanamit Temple, Bangluang Mosque and, finally, a fascinating puppet show at The Artist's House.

The Joy of Thai Cooking: The Peninsula's award-winning chefs give a step-by-step cooking demonstration clearly explaining the processes and techniques. An optional visit to a local market via The Peninsula's tuk-tuk preceeds preparation of four definitive Thai dishes and an exquisite lunch at the enchanting Thiptara Thai restaurant.

THE PENINSULA KIDS' ACADEMY

Junior Chef: The Peninsula culinary team gives children an opportunity to have fun as they cultivate their cooking talents to produce pizza, cookies, brownies or cupcakes. While they are busy mixing, stirring, kneading, spreading, tossing, squeezing, and pouring, they are having so much fun they don't even realise they are acquiring skills that will serve them a lifetime.

Thai Painting Class: Children embrace their inner artist as they learn about Thai-style art and create something of their own -an umbrella, fan, T-shirt or shoulder bag - to take home. Besides being fun, they activity boosts creativity, increases concentration, improves hand-eye coordination, builds self-esteem and confidence and develops problem-solving skills.

The programmes are priced from B1,500 to B270,000. Advance booking is required.

Having dabbled in the Footprint from The Past, Joy of Thai Cooking, Herbal Discovery and Thai Martial Arts programmes, I can vouch for their effectiveness in getting one out of the cultural straightjacket we carry around with us into an exotic culture we admire with our eyes but rarely have the opportunity to live so explicitly.

One doesn't forget in a hurry learning how to land a left hook with your leg, russtle up a classic Thai lunch dish or following in the footsteps of pioneering ancestors and being charmed by unique Thai puppet mastery beneath an ancient bodi tree beside a canal where life is still lived oblivious of the city.
