Official description

Susan Hoi a.k.a. Fossils Shell Beach features a limestone slab formed from various types of embedded mollusks dated to approximately 40 million years ago. This shell graveyard used to be a large freshwater swamp, the habitat of diverse mollusks. Due to seismic activity, the limestone layer is now distributed in great broken sheets of impressive magnitude on the seashore.

Editorial Reviews

From a distance they look like broken slabs of concrete, but after examining them more closely you'll probably realise why so many visitors to Krabi will happily desert that province's famous beaches for a while if given an opportunity to visit this site. For those "slabs" are actually deposits of fossilised shells that are believed to have been laid down more than 40 million years ago. And despite their present location by the sea, these shells once belonged not to any type of saltwater mollusc - as you might have assumed - but to a species that prefers freshwater habitats! - How to get there Susan Hoi is about 10 kilometres from Ao Nang, a popular beach area. From Ao Nang, you can either hop on a "songthaeo" mini-bus or take a motorcycle taxi to the fossil site. The latter option is recommended since it guarantees there'll be somebody around to take you back to your base. - Food and accommodation There's a good choice of restaurants and hotels to be found in the Ao Nang area. - For more information Telephone: Hat Noppharat Thara - Moo Koh Phi Phi NP on 075-637-200 Internet: Use "mollusc fossil site" or "fossilised molusc krabi" as key words when you do an online search.
