Cabbie caught cheating, filmed

A taxi driver was caught overcharging a passenger he picked up at Suvarnabhumi airport on Sunday night.

The passenger posted a video of the incident on his Facebook page, and wrote that he noticed the fare meter was clicking over unusually fast.

"I asked the cabbie about the meter, and he said it was broken and the car had a new set of wheels," the passenger wrote.

After they reached their destination the frustrated passenger filmed the taxi driver and lectured him. See how the cabbie responded in the video.

After the video went viral, the Department of Land Transport summoned the taxi driver, Nittayasai Panlert, on Tuesday. His driver's licence was suspended for a month and he was fined 2,000 baht.

According to the department, cheating taxi drivers, if caught, will have to pay a 2,000 baht fine, take a three-hour customer service course and their licence will be suspended for one month.

If the cabbie is accused repeatedly, the offender could be sentenced to a maximum three years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to 6,000 baht.
