Cambodian Interior Minister Sar Kheng has met his Lao counterpart, just weeks after a row between the two countries saw Prime Minister Hun Sen deploy troops to the Stung Treng provincial border.
Hun Sen sent troops to the border after Lao soldiers were spotted in Cambodian territory. He then met his counterpart to negotiate the withdrawal of the soldiers.
Sar Kheng met Lao Interior Minister Khammanh Souvileuth on Wednesday, the Khmer Times reported on Thursday.
The two ministers discussed the recent row and committed to ongoing cooperation against cross-border crimes, Phat Sophanith, Sar Kheng’s cabinet officer.
“Even though there was a border problem, the countries must continue to work hard and cooperate with each other to solve not only this problem but the problem of cross-border crime,” Sar Kheng told his counterpart.
Sophanith added that the meeting, which took place at Cambodia’s Interior Ministry, also addressed a road Cambodia was building near the border, which Laos disputed.
Sar Kheng noted the construction of the road had been halted to avoid unnecessary conflict.
