Myanmar's army commander-in-chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on Friday led a delegation of military officers to pay their last respects to the late Privy Council president Gen Prem Tinsulanonda at Wat Benchamabophit.
Snr Gen Min Aung Hlaing, accompanied by the Chief of the Defence Forces Pornpipat Benyasri and army commander Gen Apirat Kongsompong, also paid a visit to the Office of the Privy Council to sign a book of condolences before heading to the temple where the funeral rites are being held.
Earlier, the general had the Myanmar military attache based in Bangkok send a wreath.
In a media interview, Snr Gen Min Aung Hlaing, who is widely known as the "adopted son" of the late statesman, said he first met Gen Prem in 2012 after he became the Myanmar army's commander-in-chief.
He said he was impressed by Gen Prem's character and wisdom and considered him a father figure. When he learned about Gen Prem's passing, he felt like he lost a father.
Snr Gen Min Aung Hlaing also spoke of Gen Prem's wit and wisdom, saying he learned a great deal from the late statesman.
"Gen Prem was a man of calibre and knowledge with vast experience in various fields including military and politics. He shared his experiences and gave me advice every time I paid him a visit," he said.
