MANILA: Philippine police say 20 villagers were killed and several others injured when the truck they were riding in lost control and fell off a cliff in a remote mountain village in the country's south.

Earlier, provincial police chief Joel Limson said the truck was negotiating an upland road in Tboli town in South Cotabato province Tuesday when it apparently lost control and plummeted down a ravine.

He said 15 bodies were retrieved by police and rescuers from the wreckage at the bottom of the ravine. At least five of the injured were hospitalised in critical condition, and later succumbed to their injuries.

Limson said some of the dead included children returning from a family reunion.
