SET-listed B.Grimm Power Plc (BGRIM), the country’s largest developer and operator of small power producer (SPP) plants by capacity, is preparing to diversify into the data centre business.
The company is talking with a handful of firms about partnerships that could involve supplying up to 300 megawatts of electricity generated with fuels from renewable resources, according to Nopadej Karnasuta, senior executive vice-president for investment, innovation and sustainability.
It also plans to supply equipment for the data centre business.
Mr Nopadej said the company was conducting a feasibility study on investment in a data centre with a capacity of 100 to 200 megawatts, including the business structure and human resources requirements.
The venture could involve an asset acquisition or a new development, which is estimated to cost $10 million per megawatt.
Despite limitations on new capacity development for the state power grid, B.Grimm Power also plans to launch a smart utilities project. It would involve direct supply of electricity to buyers and smart planning of power consumption.
The investment for the smart utilities project is estimated at 10-12 billion baht, according to a Land and House Securities research report released on Thursday.
B.Grimm Power plans to develop a smart utilities project with a 102MW solar rooftop and ground-mounted solar power installation at a Siam City Cement plant in Saraburi.
Last year the company teamed up with the industrial estate developer Amata Corporation Plc to develop the Amata European Smart City at the Amata City Chonburi Industrial Estate. The 200-rai site is intended to support investment in high-technology industries from European countries.
The Energy Regulatory Commission is preparing to hold an auction to supply 3.6 gigawatts of renewable power to the state grid, and B.Grimm Power sees an opportunity to supply up to 500MW.
