The gynaecologist came under harsh social media criticism when his mean-spirited nature was revealed.

Assoc Prof Theeraporn Verathaworn on Wednesday gave 15,000 baht of his own money as a cash reward to conductress Sumon Mahidun, and 5,000 baht to Punnawit Chalongnatesodsai, the driver of air-conditioned bus No.511, as an encouragement for their honesty.

The cash reward presentation was held at the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority’s headquarters

Ms Sumon, 50, works on the Sai Tai Mai (new southern bus terminal)-Pak Nam route and was praised for her honesty when she returned the money to its owner, who in turn gave her two packs of snacks from his bag as token of his gratitude.

The 33-year-old gynaecologist earlier told police he had worked at a hospital in Chon Buri’s Sri Racha district before moving to a hospital on Bang Na Trat Road. He had withdrawn the cash from banks in Chon Buri, intending to deposit it at a bank near his new workplace.

On Sunday, he took the bus from Bang Na area to a superstore in Pu Chao Saming Phrai, but left the bag on the floor when he got off the bus.

On Tuesday, the embattled doctor explained that his family’s business had financial problems and the money would be used to help overcome the problem. He admitted the criticism had cast him in a bad light.
