Arsenal kept alive their hopes of securing a 20th successive Champions League campaign by beating last year's Premier League champions Leicester City 1-0 with a late own goal at The Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.

Arsene Wenger’s side, who have now won four of their last five league and cup games, had most of the first-half possession but it was Leicester who carved out the best early chances, Jamie Vardy firing a first-time shot into the side-netting and then Riyad Mahrez forcing a superb save from Petr Cech.

Kasper Schmeichel had to save smartly from Theo Walcott before Alexis Sanchez rattled the Leicester bar, and Granit Xhaka went close after the break with a deflected shot that Schmeichel just reached.

But it was another deflected effort -- by Nacho Monreal, in the 86th minute, that deflected off Robert Huth -- that finally undid Leicester and earned Arsenal the three vital points.

The result left Arsenal four points short of that crucial fourth Champions League spot. Leicester are six points above the relegation places, just 12 months after they won the league.

Christian Eriksen's superb long-range winner earned Tottenham Hotspur a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace to keep themselves in the Premier League title hunt.

Tottenham's eighth successive league victory cut Chelsea's lead back to four points with five games to play after they beat Southampton 4-2 on Tuesday.

After Saturday's bitter FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea, it looked like being a night of frustration for a labouring Spurs at Selhurst Park, especially after Dele Alli wasted a great chance to put them in front.

But they pounded away at Palace's massed defence and Eriksen came up with a fine winner in the 78th minute, beating keeper Wayne Hennessey from 25 yards with a powerful skidding drive that crept inside the post.

Middlesbrough sent Sunderland closer to relegation and helped its own faint hopes of survival with its first Premier League win in more than four months.

Marten de Roon put the ball through goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's legs after eight minutes to earn a 1-0 victory over last-place Sunderland.

Middlesbrough are six points behind 17th-place Hull with four games to go to stay in the Premier League. Sunderland are 12 points from safety with five games remaining, although they have a game in hand over Hull.
