Ratchanon wins Junior World Championship title

Thai junior Ratchanon Chantananuwat claimed the top honours in the 9-10 Boys Division of the IMG Golf Academy Junior World Championship 2017 in San Diego on Thursday.

Ratchanon, 10, shot a one-under 71 to finish on five-under 211 in the three-day event, three strokes ahead of compatriot Supapon Amornchaichan (69) and Ryan Liang (70) at Carlton Oaks Country Club.

It was the second time Ratchanon won this event. He captured the 6-under Boys Division title when he was six years old in 2013.

Ratchanon shot birdies on holes No.2, 10, 11 and 13 and had bogeys on No.7, 8 and 15.

Other notable results by Thai youngsters were recorded by Thanchanok Iadpluem, who finished tied fourth on one one-under 215 in the 11-12 Girls Division at Bernardo Heights Country Club, Phannapisra Kiatphonsiri, fourth in the 6-under Girls Division at Colina Park Golf Course, and Ajalawich Anantasethakul, fifth in the 7-8 Boys Division at Sycuan Resort -- Oak Glen.

In the 15-18 Boys Division, a four-day event held at Torrey Pines Golf Course -- South Course, Parathakorn Suyasri was the best Thai performer after three rounds. He was tied for ninth on two-over 218 after a 77, nine shots behind leader Devondeep Bling of the US, who hit a 70.

In the 15-18 Girls Division, Kan Bunnabodee (75) was joint 13th on one-over 217. Yuka Saso of the Philippines led the tournament on 11-under 205.

Some of the biggest names in Thai golf have won this tournament in the past, including Prom Meesawat (1997, 2002), Chinnarat Phadungsil (2005) and Kiradech Aphibarnrat (2003-2004).
