TV Pool to consider Cup rights

TV Pool is considering buying the World Cup broadcast rights, its chairman Chatudom Tittasiri said yesterday.

It is also interested in buying the broadcast rights of the 2015 Women’s World Cup with Thailand among the 24 finalists, said Lt Gen Chatudom.

He admitted that bidding for the broadcast rights of the men’s World Cup may be complicated because of the number of TV stations.

TV Pool originally had four members, Channels 3, 5, 7 and 9, but now there are a large number of TV stations thanks to the recent introduction of digital TV, Chatudom said.

TV Pool is a group of TV stations which jointly show important events such as royal ceremonies and big sporting tournaments such as the Olympics and Asian Games.

In the past, TV Pool was responsible for showing live the World Cup but its broadcast rights in Thailand have been bought by private companies since the 2002 finals.

Chatudom said TV Pool had secured the broadcast licence of this year’s Asian Games to be held in Incheon, South Korea from Sept 19-Oct 14.

It will mainly show Thai athletes competing at the Asian Games, he said.

"We want Thais to see their athletes,’’ he said.

TV Pool will continue buying the broadcast rights of the Olympics and SEA Games, Chatudom said.
