Thailand determined to beat Philippines

Thailand are already looking forward to the final ahead of their clash with the Philippines on Wednesday's semi-final second leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup at Rajamangala National Stadium.

"Our target is to win the title," Thailand assistant coach Choketawee Promrut told Tuesday's press conference.

"But we cannot underestimate any opponents and the Philippines proved in the first leg that they were tough to beat."

There is still everything to play for as the first leg in Manila on Saturday ended in a scoreless draw.

The Philippines coach Thomas Dooley said: "We are very happy to be back in Thailand. We had several chances in the last game and we drew 0-0.

"For tomorrow's game, it will be different as the stadium will be packed with 50,000 people and we will be under pressure. We have to be careful and do not let them score."

Earlier, Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang said midfielder Chanathip Songkrasin would start as a lone striker supported by wingers Mongkol Totsakrai and Kroekrit Taweekarn in a 4-3-3 formation.

"We have trained with the formation and I am confident that we will beat the Philippines in 90 minutes," said Kiatisak.

Thailand will be without strikers Kirati Kaewsombut, who got injured in the first leg, and Adisak Kraisorn, who was sent off in Manila.

Fortunately, the Asean Football Federation (AFF) has informed Thailand that Adisak is suspended for only one game and can play in the final if Thailand get past the Philippines.

Kiatisak called on Thai fans to create an electrifying atmosphere, recalling Thailand's victory over South Korea at the stadium in the quarter-finals of the 1998 Asian Games.

"This will help spur the players and put pressure on the opponents," said Kiatisak, who was a member of that team.

History is on Thailand's side as they have never lost to the Philippines in six meetings in the Asean championship with five wins and one draw.

Thailand also hammered the Philippines 3-0 in Nakhon Ratchasima in a warm-up match ahead of the 2014 tournament.

Meanwhile, a certain number of tickets will be on sale at the stadium at 1pm.
