Potential candidates desert Worawi camp

With only a few hours left before the deadline to enter the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) presidential race expires today, suspended incumbent chief Worawi Makudi's camp has yet to find a candidate for the top office.

With a Worawi comeback ruled out by the 45-day extension of his Fifa ban on Saturday, the three men being touted as his possible successors have all declined to contest the election scheduled for Feb 11.

FAT lawyer Narinpong Jinapak had said on Saturday that Worawi's camp would field a presidential candidate with reports naming Thai Premier League chairman Ong-art Korsinkha, regional league chief Wimol Kanchana and former national team coach Charnwit Phalajivin as front-runners.

However, Ong-art, Wimol and Charnwit yesterday expressed a lack of interest in contesting the election and opted out.

Wimol said he had "personal reasons" for not entering the race and he was "happy working as the chairman of the regional league".

Ong-art and Charnwit declined without giving any reasons.

It is believed that the search for a suitable candidate to represent Worawi's camp continued yesterday and it may succeed in fielding a candidate before today's deadline ends.

Former Thailand team manager Thawatchai Sajjakul, who previously announced his candidature for the FAT top office, will be submitting his application this morning at 9am.

An hour later, former national police chief Pol Gen Somyot Poompunmuang will file his form. Somyot is backed by Thai Premier League giants Buriram United and Chonburi.
