" ) Pakistan and Afghanistan are considered part of the Middle East. I would not compare Thailand to a war zone."
Nor would I, just like I wouldn't consider Pakistan and Afghanistan as part of the Middle East. These two countries are just as Asian as Thailand.

Elvis (Disc 15) Pakistan and Afghanistan are considered part of the Middle East. I would not compare Thailand to a war zone.

Just walk around in Phnom Penh for a night and then do the same in Bangkok or anywhere else in Thailand and I am sure you feel a lot saver over here. This does not mean Thailand is safe but personally I was never scared anywhere in Thailand in the last 20 years – night or day.

If you see the level of corruption and the degree of involvement by state officials in various crimes, YES it is very dangerous. The uniformed government personnel are involved in small and big crimes - and cannot really function without political backing. It is becoming riskier day by day.

I voted yes because it is not dangerous in terms of crime but in terms of corruption and getting your back stab anytime. Its bad enough to deserve a Yes to put it on the map. But there are other neighboring places such as India, Pakistan, Philippines, and Indonesia which all are same if not worse than Thailand.

Do the people who voted 'yes' realize that they consider Thailand more dangerous than the lawless Swat Valley, in Pakistan, more hazardous than some tribal areas in Afghanistan where the Taliban wreak havoc, less inviting than Kashmir and Wajiristan?
A tad absurd, in my opinion.

I really do not think it is the most dangerous country in SE Asia. Yet I voted "yes" that it is.
The danger is the Thai Tourist Authority has so successfully sold the image of Thailand as a safe paradise that tourists are largely unaware of the dangers. In other countries you know better.

The media, particularly in Britain and Australia seem to frequently write exaggerated, biased and sensational stories about Thailand every time one of their nationals gets killed or involved in any way with the Thai Police. Thailand is relatively safe.

D10: It's the third option in the poll (never been there -Right now it says 8.1 %, after my vote of "no")
Corrupt, yes. Dangerous, no. I think there are places in Asia where the likelyhood of being the victim of some sort of violence or chances of getting into some sort of accident are higher than in Thailand. I've lived in two of the most dangerous cities in the US, Richmond VA and New Orleans, both places I had to keep one eye over my shoulder at all times. I've never had that problem in Bangkok. I have, however, feared for my life just from walking around Manila.

Living here for more than 20 years I think the trend in not good. D2 Nui makes a very relevant point in my view. It is the shift to a closed Chinese style old fashioned autocracy that is worrying.
The weaknesses in applying the rule of law here is also a major problem .
