How could anyone favor more Government bureaucracy? What proof would be required, and would only certain "well connected" insurance companies be accepted? This idea is even more useless since most policies do not include coverage on motorcycles, which is the primary cause of injuries. Whoever proposed this nonsense is out of touch with reality. Thailand makes enough money off tourists that they can afford to treat the few who are injured and indigent in public hospitals.

In principle it is a good idea that people have a health insurance when they come here, but most tourists will have only a relative cheap travel health insurance which covers only emergency cases and which excludes preexisting conditions. So if someone eats something bad and needs treatment then that is paid for. But if someone arrives in Thailand with a bad heart and he visits the doctor here about his heart condition that is mostly not covered.
And normally these travel insurances are limited to maximum 1-3 months. So many of the long term tourists here would not be covered at all.
