Leicester City meet Everton in friendly

English sides clash at Supachalasai today before meeting in the opening round of the English Premier League

Leicester City and Everton will meet on Sunday in a friendly before their clash in their English Premier League opener next month.

Leicester City vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, centre, and manager Nigel Pearson, third right, open a fan store at BTS Siam station on Saturday.

The match at Supachalasai Stadium kicks off at 6pm and will be televised live on Channel 3.

English referee Mark Clattenburg will officiate the match which is part of the 25th anniversary celebration of Leicester’s parent company King Power duty-free retailer of Thailand.

Leicester, who won the Football League Championship last season to gain promotion to the top flight, will host Everton in their opening game of the new season at King Power Stadium on Aug 16.

Both Leicester manager Negel Pearson and his Everton counterpart Roberto Martinez have promised to entertain fans here.

“It will be a good game and both sides will know each other better before our meeting in the Premier League,” he said.

“We know very well that Everton are a good team and we are looking forward to meeting them.”

His players include Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan, Matthew Upson, Jamie Vardy, Paul Konchesky and David Nugent.

The club’s new signings, Leonardo Ulloa, Marc Albrighton and Benjamin Hamer, are also in the squad.

Martinez said: “The match will be an important match for us as we both want to win. I promise that we will play with our best performance and we will play attacking football from the start to entertain Thai fans.”

Everton finished fifth in the Premier League last season. Their players include England internationals Ross Barkley and Gareth Barry.

King Power boss Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha bought the club four years ago and Pearson feels grateful to the takeover.

“With support of King Power, we have been able to return to the Premier League. I am delighted to be part of this friendly match to celebrate King Power’s 25th anniversary. We are ready to play Everton here,” Pearson said.

It is Leicester’s second visit to Thailand this year. They were on vacation here in May after winning the Championship.

“I am very happy to be here again for the second time this year. Actually, for me, this is my fourth time in Bangkok,’’ he said.

Leicester vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said he hoped the match would make fans happy.

He said the Foxes were almost ready for the new season in the Premier League.

“We are 99 percent ready for the upcoming season. We have signed several new players. We will take a look at our pre-season and see where we can improve. We may sign a striker and a defender,’’ Aiyawatt said.

“Our initial target is to stay up in the English top flight.”
