Cave rescue captain awarded scholarship to study at England football academy

Tham Luang cave survivor Duangphet "Dom" Phromthep, 17, the captain of the Wild Boars football team whose rescue from a flooded cave captured the attention of the world four years ago, has won a scholarship to study at a football academy in Leicestershire, England.

On Aug 15, Duangphet posted on his Instagram account saying that he has been granted a scholarship by the Zico Foundation, which was founded by former Thai national football coach Kiatisak "Zico" Senamuang, to study at Brooke House College Football Academy.

"My dream comes true. I will be a student of the football academy in England," he wrote.

"I would like to thank Coach Zico for this. I promise to work hard and do my best."

Duangphet was the first boy who yelled out to the rescuers when they found him and 12 others, including the team's coach, trapped for 18 days deep inside the cave in Chiang Rai in 2018.

He is now studying at Vachiralai School in Chiang Mai.

After the famous rescue, he was recruited by the Chiang Mai Youth Football Club to play on its team.
