Sunrise and sunset at Phanom Rung

Viewing the sunrise from a scenic location like Phu Chi Fa in Chiang Rai province or Phu Kradueng in Loei is a popular activity for tourists.

These locations offer mountaintop views, but there is another very different view to be found at Phanom Rung, an old Khmer temple complex in Chalerm Phrakiat district of Buri Ram province.

On certain days of the year, you can see the rays of the rising sun passing through all 15 doorways of the main temple.

Monday morning was the first opportunity to see the rare sunrise this year and about 1,000 tourists, both local and foreign, flocked to catch the unusual sight which lasted about seven minutes.

Phanom Rung Historical Park chief Wasant Thepsuriyanont said the same phenomenon can be seen tomorrow morning and then visitors will have to wait until Sept 8-10 for the next opportunity.

Sunsets, too, can be just as exciting. Then the rays of the sun pass through the doorways in the opposite direction. Your next chance to see the full sunset show is not unitl October 6-8, however.

Phanom Rung was built as a Hindu religious site more than 1,000 years ago. It is one of the main attractions in Buri Ram.
