AIS carries out board reshuffle

Advanced Info Service (AIS), Thailand's largest mobile operator, has announced changes to its board of directors after a shake up to suit the shifting business environment.

AIS chief Somchai Lertsuthivong informed the Stock Exchange of Thailand yesterday that the board had approved the appointment of Kan Trakulhoon as chairman of the board and chairman of the leadership development and compensation committee, effective immediately.

Mr Kan replaced Vithit Leenutaphong, who resigned from the two positions yesterday.

The board also appointed Philip Chen Chong Tan as a new director.

Kan: A new member of the AIS board

Mr Kan is a new member of the AIS board, while Mr Tan is also chief executive of Intouch Holding, the parent company of AIS.

In October, Mr Somchai said AIS would undergo a transformation and management overhaul to deal with the more dynamic and complex business environment.

The restructuring, which will fundamentally change the company's operational form, is part of a strategic plan to become a digital service provider by 2019.

Under the new structure, Hui Weng Cheong was promoted to serve as president, assisting the chief executive. Mr Hui will retain his role as chief operating officer responsible for sales, marketing, network operations, IT solutions and customer and services management.

Mr Somchai said AIS has also reinstated two positions, chief corporate officer and chief strategy officer, to support the top management team, which includes chief financial officer, chief human resources officer, chief technology officer and chief marketing officer.

AIS announced yesterday that its service revenue totalled 30.6 billion baht in the third quarter of this year, up 2.2% year-on-year. Mr Somchai said third-quarter growth was driven by a higher number of subscribers and ever-rising internet usage.
