The national telecom regulator is teaming up with mobile operators to launch an application that can block unwanted calls in a bid to protect consumers.
Dubbed Gun Guan (which means in Thai preventing disturbance), the mobile app aims to efficiently reduce the number of complaints to the regulator's call centre regarding unrecognised numbers. The centre receives over 300 complaints a day by phone about unwanted calls.
According to Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), there are a number of apps that help users avoid such calls, but these are of little use once the user changes their phone number.
"This is the first time the NBTC and mobile operators have begun updating their customer database daily to help mobile phone users block unwanted incoming calls," he said.
The app is available on Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Users are required to register and create a pin code to access the system.
Not all numbers can be blocked, however, including debt-collection companies, insurers and credit card companies.
If such companies call after 7pm on working days or any time on Sunday the NBTC can be notified via the app and those numbers classified, with the operator sent a warning.
