52 factories expected to    join eco-friendly efforts

The Industrial Works Department is teaming up with 52 factories in central and southern regions to promote eco-friendly concepts that reduce CO2 emissions and save on energy consumption in the country's industrial sector.

The department under the Industry Ministry is promoting the bio-circular green scheme, expecting participation from 200 factories by 2020.

Within this time frame the department aims to reduce energy consumption by more than 1,000 tonnes and cut greenhouse gases by more than 5,000 tonnes.

Prakob Vivitjinda, the department's director-general, said the scheme aims to adopt innovations and technologies to preserve natural resources and manage the country's environment.

"The government has a policy to reduce pollution and wants the industrial sector to adopt environmentally friendlier methods to run their operations," he said. "Some 52 factories are ready to join the scheme, as the central and southern regions have the majority of the country's water resources."

Theses include water resources in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Trang, Songkhla, Satun, Chai Nat, Bangkok, Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Nayok, Phichit, Lop Buri and Samut Prakan.

Many of the factories are from the rubber, food, agriculture and construction sectors, such as Rubberland Products, Panel Plus Company and Charoen Pokphand Group.

The scheme aims to promote many eco-friendly economic concepts such as green products and the circular economy.

These concepts are global trends that involve the use of circular resources by the business sector and adoption of innovation to support eco-friendly concepts.

The department expects this scheme will help the business sector reduce their operation costs and increase the efficiency of value chains and products.

The bio-circular green scheme is the ministry's pilot project, with plans to encourage further participation from the business sector in 2020, said Mr Prakob.
