The cabinet on Tuesday approved 4.75 billion baht to finance the Government Data Center and Cloud (GDCC) service between 2020 and 2022.
Rachada Dhanadirek, the deputy government spokesman, said the GDCC is the central cloud system to be used by government agencies, ensuring safety and serving as a big data facility for state agencies when disasters occur.
The GDCC is handled by the Office of the National Digital Economy and Society Commission in partnership with state-owned CAT Telecom.
Ms Rachada said the government aims to develop 2,500 employees with expertise in cloud computing as part of the government's digitalisation plan.
She said the government estimates that 5 billion baht will be saved on rent for cloud services for state agencies. From fiscal 2021, all state agencies will no longer be allowed a budget to rent cloud services.
The government aims to transform all state agencies to become fully digital within three years.
Late last year, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak announced a digital government development roadmap for 2020-22. The Digital Government Development Agency (DGA) has already completed the roadmap.
The DGA was founded in 2018 under the Office of the Prime Minister to provide services and support to all government agencies with regard to digital government transformation.
The agency introduced the e-government portal www.egov.go.th a few years ago to serve as a central information hub.
Earlier this year, the CITIZENinfo application was released. The app offers services for 8,000 state agency offices nationwide, as well as the required documents before citizens contact these state agencies.
The DGA was ordered to upgrade its e-government portal.
