Huawei Technologies Thailand, signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday with the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol University, to establish a smart platform to facilitate innovative medical services.

Over the next five years, the two parties will leverage Huawei's technology to increase the efficiency of medical services and operations to improve the quality of healthcare services.

The MoU signing ceremony was held at Siriraj Medical Research Center in Bangkok between Abel Deng, chief executive of Huawei Technologies Thailand and Dr Prasit Watanapa, dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol University.

The MoU is part of the faculty's ongoing plans to turn Siriraj Hospital into a smart centre that will apply integrated digital technologies using 5G infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), big data and cloud edge computing, in order to offer enhanced services.

Under this five-year agreement, Huawei will provide 5G technology to the faculty for the upgrade of the hospital into a smart building.

"The healthcare sector can benefit immensely from smart innovations and infrastructure during this era of digitalisation," Mr Deng said. "We would like to accompany Thailand as it develops a strong, connected healthcare ecosystem in order to increase healthcare penetration in rural and remote communities and improve the quality of life of the people."

Siriraj will participate with Huawei for further 5G cooperation to promote 5G technology and innovations, in the form of demonstration events and exhibitions. The hospital will also work with Huawei for joint academic sessions.

Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital also received the CommunicAsia Awards 2020, in the "Most Innovative 5G Trial in APAC" category, for its achievement in integrating Huawei's 5G+cloud+AI Covid-19 diagnosis solution into the hospital's operations.

"This is an honour for the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital to partner with Huawei to raise the level and standards of our services and improve operational efficiency. This marks an initial step in establishing Thailand's first 5G smart state hospital," Dr Prasit said.
