Oman Air boosts Bangkok-Muscat flights

Oman Air will continue to use the Boeing 787
Oman Air will continue to use the Boeing 787 "Dreamliner" for its ramped-up Muscat-Bangkok services.

Oman Air will introduce a third daily non-stop flight between Bangkok and Muscat to cater to strong travel demand on the route.

The additional flight, commencing on June 27, will boost the Omani flag carrier's weekly seat capacity for the city-pairs to over 5,300.

The airline will continue to deploy Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, configured with 18 business-class seats and 249 in economy, for the additional flight to Bangkok.

Joseph Cusmano, manager of Oman Air for Thailand, said the additional flight further underscores Bangkok's importance as Oman Air's largest hub outside Muscat.

It also mirrors the positive outlook for growth in travel demand to and from Thailand, both for Bangkok-bound European passengers who transfer through Oman Air's Muscat hub and for Persian Gulf-originated traffic.

Oman Air saw its passenger numbers on the Bangkok-Muscat route rise 12% last year and expects the double-digit growth momentum to continue for the whole of the year, said Mr Cusmano.

"Our aircraft are always nearly full with load factor hardly ever falling below 90%," said the Australian executive.

Oman Air has been flying to Bangkok for a decade and is the only airline offering non-stop flights between the Thai and Omani capitals, allowing it to tap the bulk of market opportunities.

Long-haul, low-cost Thai AirAsia X (TAAX) suspended its twice-weekly Bangkok-Muscat non-stop flight on Jan 19 after six months of operations, citing poor market demand.

Mr Cusmano said Oman Air had never been affected by TAAX's presence because Omani travellers were not familiar with the low-cost carrier business model presented by that airline.

"Omanis have strong loyalty to their flag carrier and their preference is for full-service airlines,'' he said.

Mr Cusmano said that Oman Air Thailand is launching a new campaign to promote Oman as a new holiday destination for Thai travellers.
