The Cambodian government plans to standardise the import of automobile especially second-hand cars to ensure quality and safety for the end-user is not compromised, a senior official from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has said.
Pov Maly, secretary of state for the ministry told reporters after a meeting on Wednesday that so far, Cambodia has not set any standards on the import of second-hand cars and engines despite the constant influx of these vehicles in the country, the Khmer Times reported on Thursday.
“Because we are not an automobile producing country, we will need the standardisation of imported vehicles in the future.”
“We are now preparing a set of standards and we are working with the Ministry of Industry and Handicrafts and the Institute of Standards to discuss. We want to discuss on what kind of vehicles should we import and whether we should comply with international regulations,” said Maly.
Maly said Cambodia must follow the Asean standardisation set for 2023.
“All Asean members will set a standard for import of vehicles in compliance with international regulations..
“Today’s meeting was to conduct a study on the Asean standardisation to determine what sorts of vehicles we should use in Cambodian. So that by 2023 we will have the proper standards on any type of imported vehicles,” Maly said.
Cambodia roughly imported some 45,000 used and new vehicles -- of which 4,000 are new cars, an increase of 8 to 9% in the recent years.
