EGAT Energises Thailand's Green Future at 2023 Energy Forum

Discover Thailand's sustainable energy vision at EGAT's groundbreaking forum.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) unveiled the EGAT Energy Forum 2023, themed "Green Smart Energy Solutions," shedding light on Thailand's potential in energy innovation and showcasing sustainable advancements and new green technologies in the energy industry. This event marks a significant milestone, ushering in new opportunities in the sustainability market.

The 13th groundbreaking forum took place at the Millennium Hilton Bangkok on October 30, 2023, drawing over 500 participants, including energy experts and domestic and international companies representing various sectors.

Dr. Prasert Sinsukprasert, Permanent Secretary at the Thailand Ministry of Energy, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered the keynote speech on "Sustainability Energy Transition Roadmap of Thailand by Ministry of Energy."

Dr. Prasert emphasised, "Global warming acts as a catalyst for bolstering national energy security and embarking on a journey of energy transition. The next significant and exciting step is the era of renewable energy and sustainability." He underscored that "decarbonization is a non-negotiable mission for the energy industry.”

Speaking about the policy direction of the National Energy Plan (NEP), Dr. Prasert emphasized the need to increase the proportion of new electricity production, with a renewable energy (RE) share of at least 50%. He highlighted that considering Energy Storage System (ESS) costs would lead to lower RE costs, ensuring that the long-term cost of electricity production remains stable. Dr. Prasert also emphasized the importance of transitioning the transportation sector to green electricity through Electric Vehicles (EVs) in alignment with the 30@30 policy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhance energy efficiency, ultimately addressing issues related to PM 2.5 dust pollution.

Moreover, Dr. Prasert pointed out that adopting modern energy technology and innovation, coupled with efficient management, could result in over a 30% improvement in energy efficiency. He stressed the significance of restructuring the energy business and supporting the energy transition in accordance with the 4D1E guideline, urging all stakeholders to take this seriously.

Regarding the future of energy, he highlighted hydrogen as a promising energy source that can attract more investments and foster collaboration. Dr. Prasert also noted the growing sustainability trend in industries like aviation, exemplified by the inclusion of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) options in airline bookings.

Dr. Jiraporn Sirikum, Deputy Governor – Power Business and Acting Governor of EGAT emphasised EGAT's commitment to a greener tomorrow and a sustainable future, encapsulated in the innovative 'Triple S' strategy consisting of Source Transformation, Sink Co-creation, and Support Measure Mechanism. Under the Source Transformation Strategy, EGAT aims to shift Thailand's energy dependency from fossil fuels to renewable sources such as solar, biomass, and wind. To ensure a reliable and stable power supply and the development of Grid Modernization, under the Sink Co-creation strategy including CCUS and Reforestation. Meanwhile, the Support Measure Mechanism includes initiatives like energy efficiency labels and circular green commodities to promote resource efficiency and conscious consumer behaviour. Supportive measures include EV Ecosystem, Smart Energy Solutions and Label No. 5 Certification.

Dr. Jiraporn expressed, "The event's objective is to foster knowledge exchange, showcase EGAT's sustainable advancements in green smart energy solutions, share experiences, and seek collaborations among domestic and international stakeholders. It advocates for an eco-friendly energy industry, promoting economic growth and a low-carbon society through the remarkable journey of energy transition."

Dr. Jiraporn concluded, "EGAT Energy Forum 2023 serves as a bridge that strengthens collaboration and relationships between EGAT and its partners in the energy industry, both domestically and internationally. The forum showcases EGAT's potential in electricity production and highlights a series of cutting-edge technologies at international standards. Energy experts share knowledge and innovations in electricity production, aiming to expand electricity literacy and production for the nation moving forward."
