Energy conglomerate Bangchak Corporation Plc is expanding its non-oil business, diversifying into pet care to benefit from increased pet ownership by opening pet shops at its petrol stations.
The company is cooperating with music business operator RS Group to jointly develop new retail shops called "Pet All My Love".
Bangchak is interested in the pet business because more younger customers are owning a larger number of pets, said Chaiwat Kovavisarach, chief executive and president of Bangchak.
The company plans to open its first pet shop in Bangkok soon, eventually rising to 20 branches at Bangchak petrol stations, said Mr Chaiwat.
Roughly 100-200 million baht is expected to be allocated for this project, he said.
"We want to serve the new generation of people who love pets and treat them as members of their families," said Mr Chaiwat.
The shops will offer pet care products, pet pharmacies and a clinic, he said.
The development of pet shops aligns with Bangchak's plan to redesign its petrol stations to highlight non-oil products and services, including Intanin coffee shops, convenience stores, food and beverages, car care and electric vehicle charging outlets, said Mr Chaiwat.
The company plans to increase the number of petrol stations to 2,500 nationwide by 2030, up from 2,200 at present.
RS Group diversified into the pet business a few years ago after the government's pandemic lockdown measures caused many people to develop ties with pets, treating them as close friends.
RS Group already opened two pet shops in Bangkok: one on Charoen Rat Road and another on Hathai Rat Road.
Bangchak said it wants to serve customers of all ages under its "Your Greenovative Destination for Intergeneration" concept.
The company developed diesel that meets Euro 5 environmental emission standards.
Bangchak also reduced the sulphur level in gasoline to promote a fuel that generates less pollution.
In April, Bangchak opened its first lifestyle mall named "Chlorophyll@Hua Hin" in Prachuap Khiri Khan, focusing on food, beverages and charging facilities for battery-powered cars.
