SET closes down 22.21 to 1,575.55

The Stock Exchange of Thailand's main index fell on Monday, down 1.39% or 22.21 points to close at 1,575.55.

Total trading value was 61.34 billion baht, with 15.72 billion shares changed hands.

The SET50 index plummeted 15.26 points to 1,055.73 in trade worth 27.48 billion baht.

The MAI index slipped 11.37 points or 1.54% to 726.84, with total transaction value of 4.71 billion baht.

The SET index broke the psychological level to reach the day's high at 1,603.89 in the morning before reversing the trend to hit the day's low at 1,573.49 in the afternoon.

Maybank Kim Eng (Thailand) Plc said Germany's disappointing month-on-month October industrial output had triggered profit-taking in Europe and Asia.

At home, some trigger funds reached their targets, resulting a sell-off. As well, energy stocks plunged in line with global oil prices while construction stocks were heavily sold.

"The fact that the SET index couldn't stay above 1,600 did not help either," the brokerage said.

The rapidly weakening baht also gave rise to a concern foreigners would start selling to lock in profits.

Foreigners and local institutions were net buyers of 1.79 billion baht and 128.64 million respectively. Brokers and local individuals were net sellers of 1.42 billion and 497.86 million baht respectively.
