Discounts of up to 80% could be offered to shoppers, both Thai and foreign, who dress in traditional Thai style during the mid-year grand sale, under a promotion planned by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to boost awareness of "Thainess".

Sugree Sithivanich, TAT’s deputy governor for Marketing Communications, said the authority still anticipates tourism growth during the low season in the middle of the year, Thai Raht online reported .

The capitalise on that, TAT would work with large shopping mall groups nationwide to launch a campaign to create awareness of the main tourism marketing theme for the year, "2015 Discover Thainess".

Under the plan, Thai and foreign shoppers who dress up in traditional Thai costume would get discounts as high as 80%,  or receive discount vouchers, with validity and conditions set by participating malls.

He said the campaign would be implemented during the Amazing Thailand Grand Sale organised annually between June and September.

Mr Sugree said domestic travel in Thailand during Songkran this year was up about 8% on last year, and slightly higher than the target of 7.25%. The TAT estimated that 2.31 million Thai people travelled inside the country, generating about 7.5 billion baht in tourism revenue.
