The Industry Ministry has signed an agreement with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council to increase promotion of Thai products there.

Somchai Harnhirun, director of Department of Industrial Promotion said on Friday that the memorandum of understanding with the Hong Kong council was reached to include Thai operators in the supply chains of Hong Kong and Chinese manufacturers with high purchasing power.

It is hoped the agreement leads to a large number of activities to promote Thai products, he said. It calls for exchange of trade information, joint trade-stimulation activities, seminars for operators, and participation in Hong Kong trade fairs.

In addition, lists of Thai businesses and products will be published on the council's website at hktdc.com, in magazines and mobile applications, he said. The council comprises Hong Kong business leaders and senior government officials.

Late last month, the trade-promotion department brought 15 Thai textile, leather and jewellery companies to exhibit at the Hong Kong Gift & Premium Fair and met with about 120 local buyers. They were expected to place orders in the future, said Mr Somchai, who also is the spokesman for the Industry Ministry.

Last year, Thai exports to Hong Kong were estimated at 11.8 billion baht. Major exports include gems, jewellery, rice, leather products, clocks, electronic circuits, plastic pellets and electrical appliances.
