Club Med keen to craft Krabi resort

Club Med plans to open a US$90 million (2.87 billion baht) resort in Krabi in 2021, which will be its second location in Thailand.

The 4-Trident Club Med resort will be located on Long Beach, a 30-minute drive from Krabi airport.

The company opened Club Med Phuket 40 years ago.

"Together with our partner Apex Development, we are very excited to see our resort in Krabi grow into Thailand's premium holiday destination," said president Henri Giscard d'Estaing.

The company is also developing Club Med Ho Tram, Vietnam, also due to open in 2021. The move is part of the company's strategy to open venues "in undiscovered, idyllic locations".

In Krabi, Club Med is working in partnership with SET-listed Apex Development, whose portfolio includes Movenpick Resort & Residences in Pattaya and Sheraton Phuket Grand Bay Resort and Residences in Po Bay, Phuket.

The strategic partnership is intended to promote tourism in Krabi while creating jobs to boost and grow the local tourism industry, said a company spokesman.

"We are confident that this resort will ascend in popularity and profitability to become one of Club Med's premier properties," said Pongphan Sampawakoop, chief executive of Apex.

Club Med said the resort will be built to comply with Green Globe certification for sustainable tourism.

The resort will offer guests a number of activities, including flying trapeze, tennis, football and archery.

The property will have 300 rooms across various categories for Club Med Premium Resort and 50 suites/villas for its Exclusive Collection.

The resort will also provide a free flow of drinks, alcoholic and otherwise, dedicated facilities and services for kids, water activities and excursions.

Club Med operates nearly 70 resorts, of which 85% are rated premium or exclusive collection.

The company has a presence in 30 countries.
