Lufthansa in regional push for presence

Germany's Lufthansa Group is set to raise its presence in Thailand, Vietnam and the Mekong region this year with its latest products, routes and digital initiatives.

Mr Molnar says Lufthansa and Siam Commercial Bank are working on a QR code payment system.

Stefan Molnar, general manager for Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and the Mekong region, said the group will continue to strengthen three core strategies for the region on the heels of a brand relaunch in February.

The three main pillars are network airlines, Eurowings Group and aviation services.

In Thailand, the group's aviation network includes Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings and Edelweiss. The group plans to increase the frequency of flights to Thailand from European cities, rising from 24 flights a week to 29 during the coming high season, starting in the last quarter of this year.

The more-frequent flights will meet demand from the European market during the continent's peak travel period.

According to this year's winter schedule, Lufthansa will continue to serve Bangkok with its flagship Airbus A380-800, offering four travel classes -- first, business, premium economy and economy -- and shuttling 509 passengers between Thailand and Germany.

Edelweiss, a Switzerland-based airline and sister company of Swiss International Air Lines, introduced the new route of Ho Chi Minh City to Zurich last November. The airline operates two flights a week on the route. The carrier also operates on the existing Zurich-Phuket route during the high season.

Eurowings has announced its latest long-haul flight from Munich to Bangkok for twice-a-week service during the winter season.

Eurowings will consolidate its long-haul operations and focus on service out of Dusseldorf instead of various outbound German cities.

With the operational change, Eurowings will serve Bangkok four times a week from Dusseldorf.

Mr Molnar said one of the new developments for the Thai market is the collaboration between Lufthansa and Siam Commercial Bank on a QR code payment system.

The joint effort is the first between a European carrier and a Thai bank. The airline expects to launch the service next week.

Additionally, Austrian Airlines upgraded all of its 11 long-haul aircraft earlier this year to feature the carrier's latest premium economy class. The new travel class is available on the Bangkok-Vienna route.

"Bangkok is the only Southeast Asian destination that Austrian Airlines serves," Mr Molnar said.

Lufthansa Group reported that revenue rose by 12.4% to €35.6 billion (1.37 trillion baht) in 2017.
