Thai AirAsia has announced leadership changes which see a new chief executive officer and his predecessor become executive chairman.

Effective on Monday, founding member and director for commercial operations Santisuk Klongchaiya took over as CEO of the no-frills carrier, according to Thai AirAsia Co Ltd statement issued on the same day.

He replaced Tassapon Bijleveld, who became the executive chairman, supervising the executive board of the airline.

The changes received full backing from the board and management directors, it added.

"I assure that I am still a part of AirAsia," Mr Tassapon said. "My focus will now be on the overall executive picture and the company's direction in seeking out new opportunities for sustainable growth."

The airline called Mr Santisuk a right-hand man of Mr Tassapon, working closely with him for more than a decade on developing business strategy, marketing, sales and public relations.

"We will never stop developing and we have a clear plan for progress," the new CEO said.

Shares of Asia Aviation Plc, which operates the airline, rose 4.46% to close at 5.85 baht in the Stock Exchange of Thailand on Monday.
