The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) plans to host New Year's countdown events in Bangkok and four other provinces, aiming to draw 1 million foreign and Thai visitors.

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said that from Dec 29 to Jan 1, foreign tourists and locals are expected to generate tourism revenue of 17.3 billion baht, up 8% on the year-ago period.

Of the income, 7.8 billion baht will come from 520,000 expected foreign tourists, up 15% and 9% respectively.

Meanwhile, domestic tourists are expected to make 2.7 million trips and generate income of 9.5 billion baht, both up 3% year-on-year.

Under the theme "Amazing Thailand Countdown 2019", the event will be the last big tourism event of the year.

Aside from Bangkok, countdowns will be hosted in Nakhon Phanom in the Northeast, Chiang Rai in the North, Ratchaburi in the central region and Satun in the South, Mr Yuthasak said.

He said TAT offices domestically and overseas are promoting the event to tourists. The authority hopes to attract 1 million visitors to the five major events.

The New Year's countdown in Thailand is an essential event for many foreigners, Mr Yuthasak told reporters at a press conference on Thursday.

The TAT expects tourists to spend more money while travelling the country for the year-end celebration, as many shops, hotels and restaurants will offer promotions and marketing campaigns.

Speaking at the same media event, Narong Chearavanont, chairman of Iconsiam Superlux Residence Corporation, said Iconsiam will join with the TAT in collaboration with other partners to run a New Year's countdown at the newly opened mixed-use project on the Chao Phraya River.

The event will present an image of the river to the world and Iconsiam as a riverside destination.

"The New Year's celebration will munificently highlight the river as our new national iconic landmark," Mr Narong said.

A display of fireworks will be based on the concept of "The River of Prosperity", consisting of five acts: the River of Prosperity, Siam Treasure, Blossom of Joy, One World and Thailand.

Furthermore, there will be a khon (Thai drama) performance at the event in honour of its recognition by Unesco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In addition, leading Thai and overseas artists will be on stage New Year's Eve to keep local and foreign guests entertained. The venue's River Park is capable of accommodating 4,000 people.
