The Department of Film, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University, will conclude the "World Film Series 2019" with a screening of Budapest Noir, a masterful whodunnit thriller from Hungary, at its Dr Tiam Chokwadhana Auditorium, 3rd floor of Building 1, on Nov 18 at 6pm.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Eva Gárdos, it is a classic film noir based on a best-selling Hungarian novel that weaves its way in and out of politics, prostitutes, crime syndicates, murders and investigators, using the dark corners of Hungary's capital to present a unique pre-World War II atmosphere.

Set in the politically troubled autumn of 1936 in Budapest, the story follows Zsigmond Gordon, a world-weary reporter asking unwanted questions about the seemingly unimportant murder of a young prostitute found beaten to death and dumped in a courtyard.

Investigating the mystery girl's murder, Gordon enters a world of pornographers, brothels and communist cells leading to the highest echelons of power in Hungarian political and business circles. The more people try to scare him away, the deeper he digs in.

There will be a reception with Hungarian snacks and drinks after the screening by the Embassy of Hungary whose Ambassador Szilveszter Bus will introduce the film, shown in Hungarian with English subtitles.
