New releases that hit Thai cinemas for your viewing pleasure.

Axinla Ashagi (Down The River)

Screens on Feb 21, at Dr Tiam Chokwadhana Auditorium, building 1, 3rd Floor, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University. 

Screening is free, but bookings are essential at chulafilm2019@gmail.com.

The screening will be followed by a Zoom Q&A with the director.

Who's in it?

Namig Agayev, Mekhriban Zeki and Aleksandra Andrzejewska.

What's it about?

Ali coaches a rowing team, which also includes his son Ruslan. Just before an important race, Ali decides to replace Ruslan. But when tragedy strikes that same day, Ali is overcome with emotions he doesn't know how to deal with.

Why watch it?

It is the debut movie of a talented film-maker from a country that is creating waves on the international festival circuit.


Magic Mike's Last Dance

Directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Who's in it?

Salma Hayek, Channing Tatum and Caitlin Gerard.

What's it about?

Mike takes to the stage again, following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida. Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite who lures him with an offer he can't refuse.

Why watch it?

It will not be available to stream on Netflix in the near future. 


You and Me and Me

Directed by Wanwaew and Waewwan Hongvivatana.

Who's in it?

Anthony Buisseret and Thitiya Jirapornsilp.

What's it about?

It's 1999. As the world discusses Y2K and rumours that the world may end on New Year's Eve, middle school twins Yu and Mee worry about the future. They are very close and share everything. When a boy named Mak comes into their lives, they experience 'first love' and realise not everything can be shared.

V-Day is around the corner. 


Tár

Directed by Todd Field.

Who's in it?

Cate Blanchett, Noémie Merlant and Nina Hoss.

What's it about?

Set in the international world of Western classical music, the film centres on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra.

Why watch it?

Tár is not based on a real person despite the Google searches.
