Inspired by retro vibes of Western department stores from the 70s to 90s, illustrator Apassorn Chiravara, aka Beebs.penthouse, transformed Central: The Original Store on Charoen Krung Road into a department store filled with the spirit of celebration for "Central: The Original Store On Holiday 2024 Claus & Co".

From now until Jan 7, all five levels of the Central: The Original Store have been decorated with the characters of Santa Claus and his companions, accompanied by retro-mixed modern graphic designs, patterns and fonts.

Apassorn, well known for her "future retro" style, applied her unique approach to complement "Central: The Original Store On Holiday 2024 Claus & Co".

"The characters in this project draw inspiration from past cartoon characters, but with surreal appearances. Some characters have thin arms and legs which would make it impossible for them to stand in real life. Instead of using vivid colours like in modern artwork, retro artwork often employs neutral or muted tones. The characters' eyes from the 70s to 90s era were unique like Mickey Mouse's eyes during the early years," Apassorn explained.

The highlights of "Central: The Original Store On Holiday 2024 Claus & Co" are on Level 1 and Level 4. While Level 1 drew inspiration from a nostalgic supermarket atmosphere, Level 4 was inspired by retro playgrounds in department stores.

"Inspired by retro supermarkets, the first level, called 'Merry Gift Mart', showcases vintage style floors with white and green checkered patterns. Signs featuring retro fonts such as 'Sale Now' or 'Christmas Sale' hang from the ceiling," explained Apassorn.

"The 'Christmas Playroom' on the fourth level was designed by blending the concepts of a retro playground and a Christmas forest filled with snow. A large snowman serves as the host on this floor and snow was replaced with white balls. Visitors can enjoy playing with the balls here.

"It was a challenge to transform my 2D design into 3D space. I had to apply my design to fit with the furniture and floors in the department store. I'm thrilled to collaborate with Central: The Original Store since it aligns with my style, which blends both vintage and modern elements."
